A Bloomington community effort, the Interfaith Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration and Celebration was hosted at St. Thomas Lutheran Church. Each participating congregation was asked to read a short statement to share with the other participants. Anna Maidi spoke on behalf of the Islamic Center of Bloomington.

Here is the full text of the statement:

"Best wishes to you from the Islamic Center of Bloomington, and thank you for your well wishes. May you
always experience what Dr. Martin Luther King worked hard for: equality, justice, and human kindness that is
indiscriminate to race, creed, or color. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated in his last sermon,
"All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any
superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white
except by piety and good action." How important these words were and continue to be – let us remember
them."
